The market for gaming headsets is heating up. Gone are the days when there were only one or two good headsets. Today, there are dozens of excellent gaming headsets to choose from. But some stand above the rest: the Astro A50 has long been considered one of the best gaming headsets around. It has good sound quality, is wireless and extremely comfortable. Now, however, there’s another serious option for those looking for a decent wireless gaming headset: the Steel Series Arctis Pro Wireless.
The Astro A50 and the SteelSeries Arctis Pro Wireless have a slightly different design, and that difference might be important to you.
For starters, the SteelSeries Arstic Pro Wireless has the sleeker design of the two headsets. The headset features SteelSeries’ signature elastic headband, and the ear cups are made of matte black plastic and are adjustable. The earcups are very sturdy and won’t break unless they are subjected to a lot of wear and tear. The headset’s microphone, as with all SteelSeries products, is extendable and very comfortable.
Along with the headset, you can also purchase a wireless station that plugs into your computer. The transmitter has several ports on the back and an easily accessible volume wheel on the front. There is also a battery charger and the headset comes with two batteries. This means that the headset can be used until the batteries run out, and then replaced with charged batteries.
The Astro A50 has a slightly more luxurious design. It’s black, but with blue accents, and the controls are on the sides of the ear cups rather than the bottom – it’s not as sleek and simple as the SteelSeries Arctis Pro Wireless, but some may prefer that flourish. The microphone is retractable and not retractable. The headset does have a design advantage, though: it comes in the form of a base station. When you’re not gaming, you simply insert the headset into the base station and it’s ready to go the next time you need it.
It’s hard to argue with the design – we definitely prefer the look of the SteelSeries Arctis Pro Wireless, but nothing beats the convenience of the charging station that the Astro A50 offers – like the Arctis Pro Wireless, the base of the station has replaceable batteries and battery charging slots. In the end, it’s a tie.
The two headsets are also close in terms of comfort, offering a slightly different feel.
The Astro A50 is a very comfortable headset, thanks to the soft material covering the foam of the ear cups and headband. It’s a relatively heavy headset, but thanks to its comfort, it doesn’t feel overly heavy.
All in all, the Arctis Pro Wireless is the most comfortable headset. It stays cooler and carries the weight of the headset a bit better.
Perhaps the most important point is the sound of the two headsets. Fortunately, they both sound great, but they’re not exactly the same either.
The SteelSeries Arctis Pro Wireless offers a full range of high-quality audio. Bass is also full, perfect for kick drums and bass in music, explosions and gunfire in games. The mids are also well-tuned and warm, while the highs are loud enough to cut through your companions’ voices. The high frequencies are also detailed and clear.
It’s not as if the Astro A50 doesn’t have these qualities. In fact, that’s the case. Perhaps the biggest difference between these headphones is in the highs: While the SteelSeries Arctis Pro Wireless has a very natural sound, the Astro A50 tightens up the highs a bit. The result is a more detailed sound, but the high frequencies are a bit sharper and move a bit away from a natural sound.
The Astro A50 offers 7.1 channel surround sound. If this is the case for you, you can go directly to the link below to buy the headphones.
So which is better? If you are looking for superior sound, the SteelSeries Arctis Pro Wireless is a slightly better sounding headset. However, if you’re looking for high-end amplification or surround sound, the Astro A50 may be a better choice.
The SteelSeries Arctis Pro Wireless comes out slightly ahead in two categories. Wireless performance and battery life.
In terms of wireless performance, both headsets performed very well, and we didn’t experience any audio dropouts or pops while gaming.
However, this category is driven by battery performance: The SteelSeries Arctis Pro Wireless can be used for 10 hours on a single charge, but as mentioned earlier, the headset comes with a second battery, meaning you can swap out the battery when you’re done using it. However, the Astro A50 can be used for 15 hours on a single charge. So if it stays on the charging base when not in use, it’s unlikely that the battery will run out.
While it’s nice to be able to swap out batteries, the Astro A50 is the winner when it comes to battery life.
Gaming headset mics aren’t anything special, but the mics on these two headsets are good for gaming. If you want to record podcasts or Let’s Play videos, you should look for a dedicated mic, but for in-game chat, it’s not that important.
Overall, we found the microphone on the Astro A50 to sound slightly better than the microphone on the SteelSeries Arctis Pro Wireless. It sounds more natural and has more body.
It was a very close contest, and in the end both headsets were excellent choices – the SteelSeries Arctis Pro Wireless is about $100 more expensive than the Astro A50.
So which one should you choose? It depends. The SteelSeries Arctis Pro Wireless is the right headset for you if you’re looking for a premium headset with great comfort and sound. However, if you need a gaming headset with 7.1 surround sound and a slightly better microphone, we recommend the Astro A50.
Both are excellent gaming headsets tailored to slightly different markets. If you can’t decide yet, the SteelSeries Arctis Prr Wireless is the best headset for you.
